In the absence of obedience, sacrifice loses its value.

In this profound Day 2 message of our July 2025 Prayer and Fasting, Bro. Gerald Canaan Sohn delivers a foundational teaching on the nature of obedience and its role in establishing divine order. Building on the monthly theme "Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice," he explores the fundamental truth that "In the absence of obedience, sacrifice loses its value." Through careful examination of biblical examples including Saul's disobedience and Cain's rejected offering, Bro. Gerald reveals that obedience is not optional but essential for maintaining God's intended order in our lives and creation.

Opening: The Irreplaceable Nature of Obedience

Bro. Gerald opened with a profound declaration that would anchor his entire message: "In the absence of obedience, sacrifice loses its value." This statement immediately established the foundation for understanding why obedience cannot be substituted, exchanged, or compromised in our relationship with God. He emphasized that obedience is not merely one option among many in our spiritual journey—it is the fundamental requirement that gives meaning and value to everything else we do for God.

Core Teaching: Four Fundamental Truths About Obedience

Drawing from the monthly theme "Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice," Bro. Gerald systematically presented four crucial factors about obedience that every believer must understand:

  1.  1. Obedience Is Not a Gift - It Must Be Trained
"Obedience is not a gift - a person is not born with obedience, but it is a thing that you need to be trained to do," Bro. Gerald declared, referencing Ephesians 6:1-3 where children are instructed to obey their parents in the Lord.
This training principle applies to everyone, regardless of age or spiritual maturity. Just as children must learn to obey their parents, believers must be trained in obedience to God. It's a skill that must be developed, practiced, and refined throughout our Christian walk.

 2. Obedience Cannot Be Exchanged with Gifts
"You cannot say let me give you a gift so that I can disobey the Lord or disrespect Him. It is not a gift," he emphasized, drawing a parallel to why bribery is illegal in human society.
This principle destroys the mindset that we can compensate for disobedience through increased giving, extended prayers, or greater sacrifices. God is not impressed by our offerings if they come at the expense of our obedience to His clear commands.

 3. Obedience Is of God - The Divine Nature
Referencing Ephesians 6:1 again - "Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right" - Bro. Gerald revealed that obedience alone is of God. Making reference to creation itself, he showed how everything works in divine obedience.

"Like the Godhead - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They all obey each other. If God who is the Creator and all-powerful can obey the boundary of His decisions, then how much more we as His creation should obey Him."

This profound truth reveals that obedience is not beneath our dignity—it reflects the very nature of God Himself.

 4. Obedience Defines Divine Order
"Obedience is the only right thing with which order is defined," Bro. Gerald declared, using the example of day and night: "When the Sun is coming up, the darkness is going down. When the Sun is going down, the darkness is coming up. That is order."

He concluded this point powerfully: "If you want to have order in your life, you must obey God." Obedience is not just about following rules—it's about aligning ourselves with the divine order that governs all creation.

Biblical Case Study: Saul's Fatal Mistake

Bro. Gerald provided a detailed examination of 1 Samuel 15:20-22, where King Saul thought he was obeying God by keeping King Agag and some of the best animals alive to sacrifice to God. However, God had commanded him to destroy everything completely.

"Saul's disobedience led to God's rejection of him as king, demonstrating that partial obedience is still disobedience," he explained. This powerful example shows that we cannot modify God's commands to fit our understanding or preferences.

Samuel's response to Saul became the anchor of the message: "Obedience is better than sacrifice." No matter how great our sacrifices might appear in our eyes, if we forget what the Lord says and do not obey Him, it is all in vain.

The Heart Issue: Cain and Abel

Referencing Genesis 4:3-7, Bro. Gerald highlighted the story of Cain and Abel to address a crucial question: "You will wonder why God did not accept his sacrifice, but Abel's offering was accepted."

He explained that Abel's offering was accepted because it was offered in faith and obedience to God's instructions, while Cain's was rejected because it was not given in obedience. "This illustrates that God desires our hearts to be aligned with His will, rather than merely going through the motions of sacrifice."

The issue was never about the type of offering—it was about the heart condition and obedience of the one offering.

 The Action Principle: Beyond Words

"We are children who are to obey, and it is not just by word - it is by action. Obedience is not just a word, it is an action that must be demonstrated in our daily lives," Bro. Gerald emphasized.

True obedience is evidenced not by our declarations or intentions, but by our concrete actions that align with God's revealed will.

 Key Takeaways for Application

1. Train for Obedience: Recognize that obedience must be deliberately developed and practiced, not assumed to come naturally.
2. No Substitutes Allowed: Understand that nothing—no matter how valuable or sacrificial—can replace simple obedience to God's commands.
3. Reflect God's Nature: Embrace obedience as participation in God's own nature, not as a burden or limitation.
4. Establish Divine Order: Use obedience as the key to bringing God's order into every area of your life.
5. Check Your Heart: Ensure that your offerings and sacrifices flow from a heart aligned with God's will, not as substitutes for obedience.
6. Act on the Word: Move beyond good intentions to concrete actions that demonstrate your obedience to God's instructions.

 Prayer Focus
- Ask God to reveal areas where you've tried to substitute sacrifice for obedience
- Pray for grace to embrace obedience as a reflection of God's nature
- Surrender any resistance to God's commands that don't align with your understanding
- Ask for wisdom to discern between partial obedience and complete surrender
- Pray for the discipline to train yourself in obedience daily
